Yachts Britannia and Lulworth in brisk conditions off Norris Castle. C1930

Sold

Lulworth was the most successful of the Big Class in 1930, which was also her last year of competitive racing.

She and her main rival, Britannia, are gaff rigged but have dispensed with topmasts and have immensely tall single 'stick' masts which may have meant easier sail handling but left substantial windage when reefed.

In the background are Cambria and Candida, both designs representative of the transition to Bermudan rig that was soon to become almost universal. Lulworth was an exception and retains a gaff rig to this day
