Raters l'Allegra, Yum and Dimples sailing off the RYS at Cowes
Built to the Dixon Kemp rule that the RYA adopted in 1886. This measured the waterline length and x by the sail area then took a divisor so that the result was a simple figure that sailors could understand and relate to older rules. The potential of this rating unleashed the fastest and most radical small boat design in history. Its social significance was that it brought women to the fore as both sailors and designers as well as producing boats that were more affordable and often sailed by small crews of amateurs. These yachts are of different ratings not racing each other but enjoying brisk conditions off the RYS at the turn of the 20 th century.
