Jenny Morgan RSMA

Jenny Morgan studied at Camberwell College of Art in the 1960's, then travelled extensively gaining a sound knowledge of the sea and ships. She is one of a select group of "Award Winning" marine painters.

Awards include- Classic Boat Prize RSMA 2007, Derek Gardner Deep-Seas award 2011, RSMA Derek Gardner Sea and Sky award 2016, 2020 the RSMA Murray's Commercial Fishing Award and 2021 the RSMA The Classic Boat award.

Jenny specialises in historical working sail and fishing boats and has an international reputation as a marine artist. Commissions include one for Mystic International in the US, and various private commissions in Canada, USA, Switzerland, Australia and the UK.

"I am inspired by the heritage and  historic  detail when painting vintage yachting paintings, I work on the canvas  from researched material I have in the way of photographic references in historic books and library photographs of famous yacht races. One has to be careful not to copy photographs directly of course, but I compose works based on my own interpretations of these great yachts and  imagine what they really looked like as if one was viewing them during those days, along with technical details, tones, light, atmosphere, weather and sea-state etc.

The ships have to look convincing; I do prefer the more lively strong windy days because you get the wet effect on deck which can reflect the light and sky, and besides it adds movement and gives more of a sense of power and speed of those great yachts.  I used to sail in the

Solent for some years, the particular colour of those waters is accurate in my paintings and based on first hand experience, given conditions depicted such as wind, sun, tide, tack."

In recent years, Jenny Morgan has won three awards with the RSMA exhibition for her works, RSMA Classic Yacht painting 2017, in 2020 Jenny won The Murray's Commercial Fishing Award for her painting. In 2023 Jenny was honoured and delighted to be elected as a Life Member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists.
